Sir Douglas Mawson

The discovery of Antarctica
This Site is dedicated to the Australian explorer 'Sir Douglas Mawson'. Mawson was born in Yorkshire, UK but bought to Australia at the young age of two. While studying at The University of Sydney, Mawson majored in Geology and engineeing. He later moved to Adelaide where he settled and became the Professor of Geology.
His 1st jouney to Antarctica
Mawson first went to Antarctica with Shackleton in 1907-1909. He travelled with two other companions and reached the South Magnetic Pole for the 1st time in the history of man in 1909. This trip included over 2000 miles of sailing and nearly four months of man-hauled sleds.
Other journeys to Antarctica
Mawsons sencond journey took place in 1911 - 1914. This trip was titled : Australian Antarctic Expedition (AAE).
When they arrived there they set up their quarters in what later turned out to be the windiest place of earth, this was not a joke. In the area they stayed in, winds reached up to 160kph but averidge was 100kph. In 1912-1913, Mawson lost his two companion travellers, Mertz and Ninnis on a charting expedition around the central part of Antarctica. Mawson struggled alone back to the Commonwealth Bay using his Huskies for food. (YUK!!!)

Mawsons final trip was in 1929-1931 as the proud leader of the Australian, British and New Zealand Antarctic research Expedition (BANZARE). This expedition was famous for the disovery of Mac, Robertson Land and Princess Elizabeth land plus re-charted most of the coast. This expedition finalised that a certain part of Antarctica was to become Australian/Antarctic Territory.
